Online Courses - Advantages and Disadvantages|Online Classes

A look at the advantages and disadvantages of online classes, online colleges, and online degrees. How to Decide if Getting a Degree Online is For You.

Online Courses

If you are still undecided as to whether you should pursue an online degree or head off to a college campus, we will try to provide you with some additional resources in an effort to make a tough decision a little bit easier.  So let’s take a more focused look at the pros and cons of an online degree in order to help get a more informed perspective.

Pros

  1. Online college degrees from accredited colleges are more and more often being viewed as on par with many traditional colleges.  In fact, it is not unusual to see online courses and online degrees now being offered by traditional colleges.  In addition, most graduate schools and employers now accept online degrees.
  2. Flexibility is key is an often quoted maxim and it cannot be used enough when it comes to taking online college courses.  Generally students can choose when and where they will take their online courses and how long to spend on a class during any given day.
  3. Time – universities generally require students to spend four years on campus.  Online degrees can often be completed in one or two short years.  This can translate into a substantial amount of money in your pocket between the cost of an extra two years and the amount that you will be making during the two years that you would have been in school.
  4. Fringe benefits such as the availability of online resources that are often available to students enrolled in online courses such as online textbooks which are either free or much less costly than traditional college textbooks.
  5. Diversity – professors and students hail from all over the world.  This will provide you with an opportunity to meet different types of people that you probably wouldn’t be exposed to in a traditional college.

Cons

  1. Even though online degrees are gaining in popularity and prestige and are becoming more accepted in general, there are still going to be employers who do not recognize degrees from online universities in the same way as more traditional colleges.
  2. When you have the flexibility to attend online classes when you want to, you will have to be self-motivated in order to actually put in the time.  If you are not a self-starter, completing courses online might prove to be a challenge.
  3. Also, the ability to complete your online classes from anywhere can be extremely convenient, but there are often times many distractions when you are not in a classroom environment.  If you are easily distracted this could negatively impact your grades.
  4. If you are a people person, you might feel a bit isolated if you don’t have any face-to-face contact with other students and professors during the day.  Since all of your classes will be online you will be speaking to people online and e-mailing but lacking real interaction.
  5. It can be tempting to push off classes in favor of other activities when you do not have standard semesters and this could create a serious delay in completing your online degree.  So if you are not a somewhat rigid person you might get sidetracked and spend more time than necessary getting your online degree.
